Gators Stunned By South Carolina
Words cannot describe how shocked I was at Florida’s performance against South Carolina yesterday. I had no doubt that Florida would win and I cannot fathom that the Gators have their first losing record in the Southeastern Conference in 25 years!
Once again it the problem was the Florida offense. Yesterday Florida gained just 261 yards. They twice settled for field goals inside the 10 and fumbled twice.
At what point do you start to ask questions about Charlie Weis and Will Muschamp’s hiring of him? I like Charlie Weis and think that he is a great offensive mind. He has had success in the NFL and in college. But he likes a pro-style offense which calls for big strong lineman and big running backs. The problem is that under Urban Meyer Florida ran a spread offense. That style offense needs smaller, faster running backs and offensive lineman.
So the challenge that Wesi has is that he is trying to run his style of offense with the wrong type of players. That is not a recipe for success. And it is not going to change for a couple of years at least until Muschamp and Weis can get recruits into Florida that fit into their new system. And with a 5-5 record this season, I don’t think that Muschamp will have that much time to turn things around. So does he replace Weis or does Weis change his offensive philosophy and go with more of a spread type offense next season as Florida cannot have another offensive season like this.
