Erik Murphy Out For A Couple Of Months With A Torn Meniscus

Florida basketball coach Billy Donovan said yesterday that starting forward Erik Murphy has tore his meniscus during practice on Thursday.

He could miss a couple of months, depending on further evaluation. Donovan said he won’t know for a few days whether surgery will be required.

“With the holidays going on, the doctors to be honest with you are pretty kind to try to get this evaluated as quickly as possible,” Donovan said. “A lot of the doctors are looking at it on their computer and until they can actually get in there and look at it, they’ll find out a little bit more, but it does appear he has some form of a meniscus tear. How severe, how long he’s going to be out we’ll probably find out a lot more on Monday.

There’s nothing pressing that we’re going to find out. He’s out for the game on Monday (vs. Stetson in Orlando) and I would assume he’ll be out next week as well. I think what the procedures would be in terms of getting him back, if it requires surgery or rest, we’ll probably have a better feel for that on Monday. But the concern is it is some form of a meniscus tear. We just don’t know how severe.”

Losing Murphy for a couple of months would be a major loss to the Gators due to their limited size up front. Will Yeguete started in his place in Friday night’s win against Jacksonville and will likely keep that role, for now.
